We're Sorry Your DVD Was Delayed

Dear Ian,

As you may have heard, our shipping system was unexpectedly down for most of Monday. We should have shipped you a DVD but were unable to. Your DVD was shipped today, Tuesday, March 25th, instead.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. We will issue a 5% credit to your account in the next few days. You don't need to do anything. The credit will be automatically applied to your next billing statement.

Again, we apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding. If you need further assistance, please call us at 1 (888) 638-3549.

-The Netflix Team

Now, the movie is only going to be delayed one day, and I probably would not have had time to watch it today anyway. However, unlikes many businesses of today, Netflix not only acknowledged fault and apologized, but then, unbidden, gave me a discount on this month's bill. Obviously $0.80 is not going to make or break me, but the sheer fact that they did it is the important thing, and it is one of the most impressive things I have seen a company do for a customer in long time.

It would be have supremely easy for them to say nothing; I probably would have just assumed the USPS botched the shipping and didn't get it to me on time. But they didn't, and that's what counts.

Illegal Immigration Watch: March 26

I don't often say this, but go California. If the GOP politicians there are successful in passing this host of bills (which is, of course, a big if), it will be a serious blow to illegal immigration in one of the heaviest migrant zones of the country.

Republican legislators teamed up to unveil what one deemed a “comprehensive” plan to deal with California’s illegal immigration problem in Sacramento Tuesday, packaging 22 GOP bills their sponsors say provide crucial reforms that will curb the state’s budget crisis.

Local Democrats were critical of the plan, saying targeting the state’s illegal immigrant population would only hurt state revenues. Republicans countered that the price of providing services to illegal immigrants poses a serious cost to California taxpayers and further burdens the state’s $16-billion deficit.

“Both Republicans and Democrats are getting pressure on the budget issue, and there are a lot of programs that have to be cut,” said Assemblyman Jim Silva, who organized the plan and news conference. “What we’re trying to do here is take out the loopholes in the budget process where we’re losing money and make sure it goes to the citizens of California.”

“The state is in a financial life raft that is sinking,” he added. “The California Assembly Republicans have now offered a number of solutions.”

“I think this is all ridiculous,” Orange County Democratic Party chairman Frank Barbaro said. “We have become incredibly addicted to this workforce — I don’t know what California would do without the Latino immigration that we have, whether it’s legal or illegal…we’d be up a creek without a paddle.”

Naturally, the Dems are defending the illegals, but what else is new?

A full list of the bills: http://republican.assembly.ca.gov/members/a67/Index.aspx?page=PR&pr=4516

And some highlights:

AB 107, by Assemblyman Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, requires a prospective bidder for a state contract for public works, goods, or services to certify, under penalty of perjury, that it does not employ "unauthorized aliens," as defined under federal law.

AB 286, also by Assemblyman Cook, repeals the law that gives illegals an exemption from paying nonresident tutition at California Community Colleges and the California State University.

AB 1882, by Assemblyman Garrick, R-Carlsbad, adds DUI to the list of crimes for which immigration status is required to be checked. If a person arrested for DUI is suspected to be in the country illegally, the arresting agency is required to contact immigration officials to make a final determination.

Assembly Bill 2812, by Assemblyman Jim Silva, R-Huntington Beach, would add “illegal immigration” to the list the governor can use to declare a state of emergency at the state or local level.

How about we just elect Silva as President?

Illegal Immigration Watch: March 24

Heroes:

FamilySecurityMatters.org contributing editor Michael Cutler, who wrote this column on the consequences of illegal immigration to blue collared workers.

The illegal aliens who work in our country not only displace American workers, but send money out of the country, enriching the economies of their native countries while doing serious harm to ours. Last year an estimated 45 billion dollars was wired from the United States to Latin America and the Caribbean. Many billions more were wired to other countries around the world. Additionally, money was smuggled out of the United States by illegal aliens.

Exactly the point many politicians miss; those 45 billion dollars could have (should have) been used on our own economy.

The presence of 20 million illegal and undocumented aliens represents a huge threat to national security. The true identities of these aliens are unknown and unknowable. Our government is uncertain as to their nationalities, their criminal histories or their affiliations with criminal terrorist or criminal organizations – at a time of war against terrorists who have repeatedly demonstrated contempt for human lives- our human lives!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The Bush Administration, for their stunning announcement that they will attempt to prosecute companies that do not fire employees identified as possible illegal immigrants. From an administration that has been dead-set on shamnesty, this is relatively impressive.

Zeros:

The worthless idiots in the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, who ruled that a Rutherford County sheriff's deputy "unreasonably detained an illegal immigrant during a traffic stop."

Let's take a closer look at that, shall we? How, exactly, do you unreasonably detain a criminal who has no right to be, well, anywhere in the country. How is that unreasonable? The man lied about his immigration status, which is more than enough probable cause, in my opinion, for the cop to search the car for drugs.

This one needs to appealed all the way to the Supreme Court. They are fresh off the constitutional beatdown regarding the 2nd Amendment last week, and I would love to see them shred the 6th Circuit. Activist judges are going to be the end of us.

Musharraf Ousted

It was kind of expected, but it's still great to see another military dictator removed from office.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's parliament elected Yousaf Raza Gilani, a long-time aide to slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, as its new prime minister Monday.
Yousaf Raza Gilani was elected by Pakistan's Parliament as the country's next prime minister.
Gilani received 260 votes, while his opponent from a party backing President Pervez Musharraf received 42 votes.
Gilani, 55, had been expected to sail through because opposition parties that swept the parliamentary elections last month have a two-thirds ruling majority.

Hopefully, this marks the start of Pakistan being a REAL ally in the War on Terror, not a "we're your ally but you can't come after the terrorists we are protecting" kind of ally.

Chris Matthews' Leg Responds to Obama's Damage Control Dissertation

Chris Matthews' Leg responds to Obama's "Hope for Race and Change, with Hopeful Change and Race" damage control speech.

Never in the history of American oratory has such soaring rhetoric been deployed so majestically in the service of campaign damage control.

That’s why Chris Matthews’ Leg felt “it” again today. That electric surge of hope-change-love-peace running from his toes up his sciatic nerve. “I am healed,” The Leg declared serenely.

The Leg couldn’t help but admire the brilliant timing of Obama’s decision to bravely lead the nation in a frank discussion about race—choosing the very moment in which he is forced to talk about race to get his backside out of a sling.

Only a statesman of Obama’s skill and stature could successfully excuse himself for sitting under the teaching of a racist conspiracy nut for two decades simply by equating him with the little white grandmother who raised him and who apparently used a few racial terms considered politically incorrect now 40 years later.

Well said. I still can't understand why people can't see through Obama's rhetoric. He spoke for what seemed like hours today, and at the end I think I was more confused than when he started.

"Ok, so you don't condone what Wright said. Got it. Oh, but you don't condemn it? Oh, oh, you condemn it but you won't condemn him? But isn't a man a sum of what he says and does? And this man was your mentor for 20 years, and was on your campaign's religious advisor committee all the way until last week? But he has no influence on you whatsoever, right. Amendment, it appears that a majority of the Supreme Court believe that gun ownership is a right and is not tied to service in a state militia.

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court has heard arguments about the meaning of the Second Amendment and the Districts of Columbia's ban on handguns.

A majority appears to support the view that the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns, rather than somehow linking right to service in a state militia.

But it is less clear what that means for the District's 32-year-old ban on handguns, perhaps the strictest gun control law in the nation.

"Does that make it unreasonable for a city with a very high crime rate...to say no handguns here?" Justice Stephen Breyer said.

Thank god.

Updated:

The basic issue for the justices is whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

A key justice, Anthony Kennedy, seemed to settle that question early on when he said the Second Amendment gives "a general right to bear arms." Apparently, Congress stupidly decided to get started early.

WASHINGTON - Both houses of Congress endorsed the idea of tax increases for millions of Americans Thursday as Democrats pressed ahead with budget plans that would allow some or all of President Bush's reductions to die after he leaves office.

Idiots. If you want to pass ridiculous legislation that will harm the citizens, you have to wait until you have a Democrat in as president, otherwise it is going to get vetoed. It is technically a non-binding resolution, but it's still unnecessary.

McCain's tax cuts would require applying a meat cleaver to spending, while the Democrats promise spending that would enlarge the deficit or require too-large tax increases.

A meat cleaver to spending. Of course, it still has to move through the Senate, but it's still a step in the right direction.

The legislation would require higher education institutions to verify to lawmakers that they have not knowingly enrolled illegal immigrants before the institutions can receive state money.

House members gave first-round approval to the bill Wednesday on a voice vote, after defeating an amendment to exempt community colleges from the bill. A second vote is needed to send the bill to the Senate, where it has stalled the past two years.

...

As a result of a 1982 Supreme Court decision, states must provide K-12 public education to all students, whether they are in the U.S. legally or not. But federal law discourages states from providing illegal immigrants a higher education.

Sponsoring Rep. Jerry Nolte said there is a logical reason for the distinction.

"It does not make economic sense to spend taxpayer money to train a work force that is not legal to work here," said Nolte, R-Gladstone.

Amen.

Zeros:

The Kansas State Senate, who massacred a perfectly good immigration bill.

A Kansas Senate committee endorsed an immigration reform bill after eliminating proposals that are most important to those wanting the state to take a tough stand on the issue. The committee stripped from the bill:

•A requirement that businesses check new hires against E-Verify, a federal database of legal workers;

•Criminal penalties for businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants;

•Requirements that local police do more to enforce immigration law.

So let's see if I have this right; they are moving forward an "immigration enforcement bill" that does not give criminal penalties to businesses, does not require businesses to check new employee's legal status, and does not require the local police to "do more" to enforce immigration law.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that every part of the bill that was ripped out deals with enforcement, which sort of seems at least mildly important when you are trying to pass an 'enforcement bill.' Sen. Palmer concurs:

“Every important part of the bill was taken out,” said Sen. Peggy Palmer, an Augusta Republican who is the sponsor of the Senate bill. “They’re listening to big business as opposed to the people of Kansas.”

That chill in the air isn't from the cold weather; it is a dark shroud created by the birth of yet another shamnesty bill.

Illegal Immigration Watch: March 12

Heroes:

Daniel Hartman, a junior at Tufts University who wrote this excellent illegal immigration editorial. I know from experience that penning right-wing articles at an institution of higher learning is simply asking to be lynched; kudos to Hartman for speaking his mind anyway. Hartman is also the president of Tufts Republicans...show them some love.

Russell Pearce (R-Mesa), an Arizona State Rep., who is behind some of the nation's toughest immigration laws and is continuing to fight illegal immigration tooth and nail. Ignore the fact that the NPR article is terribly biased against him (because NPR has no idea how to be unbiased); this man is a putting forth an example lawmakers all over the country (especially those in Washington) should follow.

Zeros:

TIME, for publishing this garbage. The article is basically an altar of praise for a new Colombian movie that is coming out that is supposed to show us ignorant Americans all the terrible things illegals go through trying to get here. I'm sorry; do I care what happens to foreign invaders violating our laws? Not particularly, no. Maybe they should stay on their side of the Rio Grande, or maybe, just maybe, follow the laws and come here legally.

On top of the fact that the movie itself looks like a great pro-illegal piece of rhetoric (I can't completely judge because obviously I haven't seen it), my main beef is with how TIME presented it in this article. Using lines like these:

There is a hellish scene in the new Colombian film Paraiso Travel that should be watched by any American who has ever hired illegal immigrants —and, for that matter, any American who has ever shouted for their deportation. A group of weary Colombian migrants, having waded across a rushing river from Guatemala to Mexico, is violently set upon by the Maras, bloodthirsty gangbangers who prowl that border corridor. Men are shot, women are raped, children are terrorized. It's an almost daily occurrence of migrant life in this hemisphere, and the film captures it with haunting authenticity.

The opening of the article. Yes, that certainly sounds awful. Would it have happened if they hadn't immigrated to the country illegally? No. So now we are supposed to watch this movie and that get New Age-ish guilt that everyone is supposed to feel when they see stuff like this, but this situation is not like an Iraqi Death Squad attack or a Rwanda killing field...this is completely brought on by these people coming across borders illegally. Do it right, or don't do it at all.

Immigration cranks like Lou Dobbs

Smooth, unbiased journalism at its best.

...the latter cause xenophobes to ignore the causes of illegal immigration — the deep poverty down there and the deep demand for cheap labor up here — and block the necessary and reasonable proposals for managing it

Xenophobes? Again with that unbiased journalism; great to see it.

Oh, and last year's shamnesty bill was NOT a reasonable proposal

Not that Paraiso Travel doesn't also depict the uplifting immigrant success stories and the broad economic benefits the U.S. derives from its underground workforce.

Yeah, the massive strain placed on our medical and education facilities is one of those economic benefits that I just couldn't do without. Every morning, I wake up and say, thank you world, for allowing me to pay more taxes so that illegal migrants can go to the emergency room for a cold and get free tuition for their 10,000 kids. I don't know what I would do with that money if I didn't fritter it away paying for a bunch of criminals to live in my country.

"I'm fortunate to live in the U.S. legally," says producer Santiago Diaz, a Bogota native, "but we all know people living here illegally, and their story should be told. We made this film for them."

Wow, you made a film about illegals for illegals. Scintillating. Would you mind telling their story to the INS?

And perhaps another: is our immigration dysfunction really worth the human pain it causes migrants and the political pain it causes us?

The pain it causes migrants? They bring it on themselves by coming here illegally. My heart bleeds not for he who brings about his own struggles.

Oh, sure, they have a couple of wet-noodle comments aimed at illegal immigration apologists, but overall, it's easy to tell where the writer's sympathies lie. Even the title of the article is a giveaway: "An Honest Look At Illegal Immigration," when it's a movie created by a Colombian who expresses sympathy for illegals. Please.

Yep, the Bush Administration is a Failure

You know, they managed to stop all of these terrorist attacks, but of course, Bush is the worst president ever and we just went through eight years of pure hell.

I tell you, after dodging IEDs on my way to the post office and getting an RPG round shot through the window of my apartment, I sure wish that we had had an administration that would have been a little more focused on homeland security (maybe they should have created an entire wing of the government devoted to it).

After September 11th, the number of terrorist attacks on this country has just been absurd; I just wish that this country would have had proper leadership that could have kept the terrorists off our soil.

My rant for the day...the Left whining about how "bad" and "awful" of a leader George W. No provision in the package mimics the 2006 comprehensive immigration reform measures — proposed by Sens. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — that focused on allowing guest workers into the country.

The specific pieces of legislation deal with everything from completing the 700-mile border fence already in progress, establishing English as the national language, instituting tougher workplace enforcement rules, stripping local police agencies of funding if they support "sanctuary cities" and banning driver's licenses to illegals, something that tripped up Democratic presidential candidate and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton earlier this year as her state's governor initially supported the idea.

Now THAT is an immigration bill! Fencing, English, no Federal funding for sanctuary cities...it's a veritable treasure trove of anti-illegal goodness.

Sadly enough, it may not get too far in the Senate, but at least they are going forward with a set of bills that actually make sense, rather than another pile of shamnesty garbage that rewards criminals.

It's Official - McCain is the nominee

Well...that was kind of a forgone conclusion.

Update 9:09 EST: Huckabee to drop out tonight. Let's try that plan for a change.

GOP Super Tuesday Results

My predictions, followed by the result and comments.

Alabama - Huckabee (correct)
Proportional delegate distribution meant that Huck only picked up 4 more than McCain, so essentially a push.

Alaska - McCain (incorrect, Romney)
Romney shows his strength, again, in the north. Another proportional state, however; Romney picked up 12 and Huckabee got 6.

Arizona - McCain (correct)
It was touch and go through the first 15% of the precincts, but McCain ended with a comfortable 13-point lead in his home state.

Arkansas - Huckabee (correct)
A much stronger showing by Huckabee in AR than McCain in AZ. The difference? Huck got 26 delegates for stomping everyone in AR, and McCain got 53 for "just" winning AZ.

California - McCain (correct)
The results are not all in, but it looks like McCain will have the lion's share of the proportional delegates. Not like he needs them at this point.

Colorado - McCain (incorrect, Romney)
Mitt snags 22 handily.

Connecticut - McCain (correct)
WTA state, and McCain crushed Romney right next door to Romney's home turf.

Delaware - McCain (correct)
Ditto

Georgia - Huckabee (correct)
Huckabee's biggest win of the night.

Illinois - McCain (correct)
My home state (and my county for god's sake) went heavily McCain, giving him an easy 54 delegates.

Massachusetts - Romney (correct)
McCain made it close enough in MA to create a push; Romney pulled 22 and McCain grabbed 18. Pretty pathetic showing for Romney in his home state.

Minnesota - Romney (correct)
Expected; close to Michigan, full of people who consider the economy their number one issue and for some reason think that Romney is the man to fix it.

Missouri - Huckabee (incorrect, McCain)
This is the state that killed Huckabee's presidential hopes. He lost by a measly 9000 votes, but with WTA, it may as well have been 900,000. The 120 delegate swing if he had won would have put him in much better shape. Now, he settles for VP or a cabinet position.

Montana - McCain (incorrect, Romney)
Again, Romney with the north. I guess he looks sort of like a viking; he certainly talks like one.

New Jersey - McCain (correct)
New Jersey, New Hampshire...same difference.

New York - McCain (correct)
The most liberal GOP candidate wins in a liberal state? You're kidding!!?!?!

North Dakota - Romney (correct)
Remember the north?

Oklahoma - Huckabee (incorrect, McCain)
Another close race; Huckabee got 6 for finishing second, while McCain pulled down 32.

Tennessee - Huckabee (correct)
While this close race fell in Huckabee's "favor," proportional delegate distribution meant that McCain only got 7 less, more than enough to keep Huckabee down.

Utah - Romney (correct)
Mormon capitol of the world.

West Virginia - McCain/Huckabee (my one toss up) (correct, Huckabee)
The Huck won the WV convention early in the day, but according the McCain campaign, only because the latter ordered his supports to vote Huckabee in order to prevent Romney from getting the delegates. Sound strategy on McShamnesty's part, but ironically it turned out that Huckabee was his main competition later on in the evening.

Overall: As predicted, McCain did very well. I hesitate to say he "dominated," but all in all, he's pretty much wrapped up the nomination. The biggest surprise to the media was the success of Huckabee, who stormed to the win in several states, despite being written off for dead weeks ago.

It wasn't a surprise to me, of course; I'm not the liberal media. I expected Huckabee to do well (and I hoped he'd do even better than I expected, if that makes sense). Unfortunately, he just doesn't have the broad appeal at this point. Plus, people are all twitchy about a minister being president. All I get to hear is shrill voices screaming "separation of church and state." It's hilarious how many people don't actually know what that means. It doesn't mean there can be NO religion on government; it means that government shall make no law establishing a national, required religion. Taking The Ten Commandments down from a courthouse is not preserving precious "separation of church and state," it is infringing on freedom of speech.

But I'm digressing; the only way for Romney or Huckabee to win now would be to combine delegates. Since both of them detest the other with a fury only matched by Ted Kennedy's rage when he runs out of booze, there's no chance of that happening.

McCain is going to get the nomination, and hopefully Huckabee can parlay his 2nd place status into something useful (whether it is VP or something else). Personally, I think McCain needs an extremely conservative running mate in order to make his candidacy a little less vomit inducing. Newt Gingrich, maybe, or Duncan Hunter. Just someone that isn't such a RINO.

One day, McCain is going to reach across that aisle one too many times, and he's going to get his arm chopped off.

GOP Super Tuesday Predictions

Winners, by state:

Alabama - Huckabee
Alaska - McCain
Arizona - McCain
Arkansas - Huckabee
California - McCain
Colorado - McCain
Connecticut - McCain
Delaware - McCain
Georgia - Huckabee
Illinois - McCain
Massachusetts - Romney
Minnesota - Romney
Missouri - Huckabee
Montana - McCain
New Jersey - McCain
New York - McCain
North Dakota - Romney
Oklahoma - Huckabee
Tennessee - Huckabee
Utah - Romney
West Virginia - McCain/Huckabee (my one toss up)

Basically, it's looking like a blowout for Mr. McShamnesty. That's what's at stake in this contest, and with Florida being winner-take-all, whoever wins is going to have a nice jump into Super Tuesday.

Despite the fact that the polls show a lot closer of a contest, I think McCain is going to open it up a bit over Romney because the latter got pretty hammered at the last debate. Huckabee will pull off a third, and Giuliani will watch his campaign go up in smoke as the state he most heavily campaigned will reward him with a lukewarm fourth place finish.

If McCain wins, the delegate count heading into Super Tuesday will be as follows:

McCain - 93
Romney - 59
Huckabee - 40

That's still a wide open race; California, New York and my good old Illinois are going to play huge roles on Super Tuesday, but unless Romney wins Florida, I really can't say that any of the three will be the "front runner" come February 5.

My Predictions:

1. John McCain - 32%
2. Mitt Romney - 28%
3. Mike Huckabee - 19%
4. Rudy Giuliani - 15%
5. According to the Times of London, a new children's book based on the Three Little Pigs has been ruled "offensive," because the whole "pig" part may offend Muslims.

Seriously? Seriously??? If we're going that far, EVERYONE can theoretically be offended by EVERYTHING. For example, I guess I'm now "offended" by every movie or show or comedian who portrays the Catholic church or Irish people in a bad light. Take 'em all off the air! After each person brings up their culture and heritage and we remove all those "offensive" pieces of media, we'll be left with Tony Little and Billy Mays infomercials for the rest of our lives.

Oh, how I am reminded of the "Utopian" future shown in the movie Demolition Man. If you haven't seen it, go get it. On top of being a good, cheesy sci-fi flick, it also has one of the lamest and most PC "future of the world" displays that I've ever seen. Why do I mention this? Well, I like to digress for one, but also because that is where we are headed.

This is becoming sheer insanity at this point; this oversensitivity to everything is going to ruin culture, freedom of speech, heck, it's going to take down modern civilization as we know it if we're not careful.

Five years ago, this would have been a satirical story on The Onion. Now it's reality. Political correctness is a plague, ladies and gentlemen. Be careful not to catch it, or you will end up as a member of the 'Whitewashed Opinionless Drone Army' that the secular-progressives are currently building.

Oh...I probably can't say that. It offends builders.

And here I thought Jihad meant 'Holy War'

Apparently, it doesn't, at least according to a textbook being taught in some California middle schools.

The textbook says, among other things, that:

An Islamic "jihad" is an effort by Muslims to convince "others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research," according to a middle school textbook used in California and other states.

The word 'jihad,' mind you, literally means "struggle," and for centuries represented Islam attacking "heretics" and "infidels." Apologists for Islamofacists claim that today is has a more spiritual context, that it means a war against sin and evil, but Osama Bin Laden himself has invoked the term numerous times when referring to the "Western crusaders" that he wants all of Islam to destroy.

This is a religious term that caused the death of 3000 Americans on 9/11, and now we are misrepresenting it to kids in order to give them a rosy, sterile and politically correct portrait of Islam?

Now, on top of this flagrant misrepresentation of the term 'jihad,' where are all the crazed 'separation of church and state' people at now? The Evangelical vote will most likely swing to Huckabee, but the veterans will probably swing to McCain. The wild card is Thompson; not that he can win, of course, but because he is sapping away the hardcore social conservative voters who would otherwise go to Huckabee, while McCain is still going to have his moderate voter block. I am envisioning a terrible replay of 1992, where Perot stole away enough of Bush Sr's votes to allow the terrible rise of Bill Clinton.

McCain isn't as bad as Clinton, mind you, but unfortunately I think the Huckabee/Thompson split is going to seriously hurt either of their chances. Thompson has been attacking Huckabee non-stop for two weeks now, because he knows that is his best chance to steal votes. The right-wing of the part is going to vote either Thompson or Huckabee, it's that simple. McCain is too centrist for a lot of Republicans, which somehow makes him a frontrunner.

Only in election year.

My Predictions:

1. John McCain - 27%
2. Mike Huckabee - 27%
3. Fred Thompson - 16%
4. Mitt Romney - 13%
5. Ron Paul - 6%
6. All he said was good things about America in general, and then he attacked Washington directly and McCain indirectly. Interestingly, his attack on Washington, saying that the entire thing is "broken," is an attack on a lot of people, including George W. Bush and every other Republican. This really isn't the best idea when you are trying to win the support of the GOP base in my opinion. This sort of "bash everyone in Washington" theory may work for Obama because the Democrats still believe that everything is the GOP's fault, but Romney isn't going to make friends by trashing the entire party.

Random thought: anyone else think his little crowd-response chants were a little...umm...odd? Example: "Is Washington broken?!!?!" "YES!!!" "Can we fix it?!?!?!" "YES!!!"

Is he a serious Presidential candidate or a cheerleader?

Also: he takes this primary claiming he's going to "bail out" the auto industry. Now, a very legitimate point made by Fred Barnes on FOX: if you are going to "bail out" the auto industry, what about the textiles industry? Or the plastics industry?

Isn't government intervention in businesses a trait of Communism? Just saying.

GOP Primary Predictions: Michigan

Michigan Primary (Tuesday, January 15)

Cut and dried balloting, second standard primary.

Momentum: McCain, McCain, McCain. A Michigan win will be huge for him heading into South Carolina, because he is already the frontrunner there. Huckabee is also moving up as well; his showing in New Hampshire, while ignored in the media, was actually quite strong, given how liberal the state is. He'll be tough in South Carolina.
Losing Ground: Romney. He was pathetic in the SC debate, and after losing what he claimed would be an easy victory in NH, he is seriously hurting. He recently pulled all his advertising from SC and put all his focus on MI, but it won't help him.
Who is out after Michigan: Ron Paul (but he's been out for a long time at this point), Thompson and Giuliani. The latter has put all his eggs into the Florida basket, but he's expecting to walk into the Sunshine State and say, hey, look at me, I have placed fourth or worse in every primary so far, but you all need to vote for me, and quite frankly, it's not going to happen. As for Thompson, he put on a very good show at the SC primary last week, but unfortunately for him, it is too little too late. He showed some fire and showed that he had some strong positions, but he's sustained too many losses already to make his campaign viable.

My Predictions:

1. John McCain - 29% (winner)
2. Mitt Romney - 27.5%
3. Mike Huckabee - 16%
4. Fred Thompson - 9.5%
5. Rudy Giuliani - 8%
6. Now, the New England Journal of Medicine estimates that the actual toll is less than a quarter of that...150,000.

I find this exceedingly annoying, because the timing of the release of the study was intentionally set to coincide with the 2006 midterms, and the Dems used these most likely doctored numbers to springboard into the House and Senate, and we see the results of THAT little mess. The Democrats are so delusioned that now they are calling a guy with three years of national political experience their new champion.

On top of that, the researchers of the project were admittedly anti-war from the start.

I want to share a little love across the blogosphere at this point, because Tigerhawk has an extremely effective analysis of these revelations here.

Someone asked me last week why Soros doesn't just run for President with all this money. His campaign has seen a resurgence, and with South Carolina on the horizon (which he won in 2000 en route to losing the overall nomination to G.W. Bush), competitors better keep an eye on him.
Losing Ground: Giuliani, Thompson. They simply don't have the platform or support to stay with the front three at this point. This is funny to say about Giuliani who was long considered the odds-on favorite, but once the people realized that every one of his policies and positions revolves around something he did in New York, he got very old, very fast.
Who is out after New Hampshire: Duncan Hunter probably and Ron Paul for sure. Hunter and Paul were both excluded from the FOX GOP debate this past weekend, and Hunter was also excluded from the ABC debate, and both of those are kind of giveaways. I'm no fan of letting the media pick our President, mind you, but it is not realistic to think that either of them will win the nomination at this point. Paul is too...well, Ron Paul-ish, and while Duncan Hunter is easily the best man for the job, apparently the country isn't ready for another Ronald Reagan. It's our loss, really, but at least Hunter will go back to writing solid defense bills and manning his position on the Armed Services Committee. For the three major news networks, the study found that reporting of Democratic candidates was 47 percent positive and 53 percent negative, and reports on Republican candidates was 40 percent positive and 60 percent negative.

Basically, this is something we knew already, and they are just making it official. The Democrat Majority Apparently Doesn't

For all of their bluster and their lies that they want to help protect the country, they just took another huge step towards destroying it.

Since President Bush signed H.R. 2764 into law, it will essentially repeal the Secure Border Act of last year, and it means that there is longer be any legal requirements to construct ANY fence whatsoever.

Keep in mind that the places along the border where the double layered fence were installed, illegal crossings were seriously reduced:

As part of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform Act (P.L. 104-208), Rep. Hunter authored the legislative language mandating a 14-mile triple fence along the San Diego-Mexico land border, which augmented the single layer fence he had built with surplus landing-matt in 1989. Since then he has worked, most notably against strong opposition of the Clinton Administration, to see that project completed. Since construction of the San Diego fence began:

Illegal alien apprehensions along the fenced region dropped from over 202,000 in 1992 to about 9,000 in 2004. Further, it is estimated that the apprehensions vs. attempts ratio increased to over 90%;

With the establishment of the San Diego border fence, crime rates in San Diego have fallen off dramatically. According to the FBI Crime Index, crime in San Diego County dropped 56.3% between 1989 to 2000;

Vehicle drive-throughs in the region have fallen from between 6 to 10 per day before the construction of border infrastructure, to only 4 drive-throughs in 2004 and those occurred only where the secondary fence is incomplete;

The fence has forced drug smugglers, who once easily crossed the San Diego border, to attempt to enter the U.S. through major ports of entry instead. This significantly increases the likelihood of discovery and seizure of illegal narcotics entering our country.

As a result of the success of the San Diego fence, Rep. Hunter authored the provisions of the Secure Fence Act calling for the construction of 854 miles of border fence along the five most prolific smuggling corridors on the Southwest border. While construction of the Secure Fence project is not moving as rapidly as Rep. Hunter would like, the Administration is moving forward and as of September 30, 2007, 70 miles of new border pedestrian fence has been constructed. Congressman Hunter remains engaged in ensuring that the Administration meets the mandates put in place by the Secure Fence Act and secures our borders as rapidly as possible.

http://www.gohunter08.com/inner.asp?z=4

This is typical of the Democrats, though. These provisions are just snuck into the bill as well. If you read the whole thing, you'll see that it is mostly a spending bill, with the border defense destruction hidden way down deep.

On top of the immigration fence problems, the whole thing is totally full of pork...but that's a whole other topic.

I'm so sick of this Congress.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://conservativerumblings.blogspot.com/2007/12/who-needs-border-fence-democrat.html' title='Who Needs a Border Fence? Under my tenure, I will abolish air, because it has failed. Hey you whippersnappers, get off my lawn! We have failed, I have failed, you have failed. Our foreign policy, our foreign policy, our foreign policy…I’m sorry, that’s an exercise my therapist tells me to do when my Alzheimer’s kicks in, you have to repeat things three times, three times, three times. We have failed! Where’s Bin Laden! I want to surrender to him, cause we’ve failed! We’re done; let’s be a subsidy of Al Qaeda! It’s over! We’ve failed! September 11 was an inside job, but they failed! Wait, no, they didn’t, but we did. Or they failed and we didn’t? I just…FAIL! YOU! You think I can’t kick your sorry ass all over this stage? Well, you’re wrong. Oh, and let’s bomb Syria, Pakistan, Iran, China, North Korea and Turkey. After that, we’ll take down Libya and the UAE, followed by Turkmenistan, France, Germany, Denmark and possibly Massachusetts. After we annex Canada and sink Mexico into the ocean to keep the South Americans from getting up here, we need to mine the oceans, put missiles on the moon and shoot down all those Russian satellites. We need to save that aggression for the godless Mormons like Mitt Romney and devil worshipping Democrats like Hillary Clinton. They are the real enemies here. But why are they taking their aggression out on the troops, who ironically are protecting their right to be idiots?

The only "political statement" being made here is the one that the SPs are making, that their rampant anti-war sentiment is going to take more precedence than anything else, including the comfort and morale of our troops. Apparently, she is also upset with the Democratic party, and so she is leaving that too. It says a lot about how messed up the Democratic party is today when they have a crazy activist who fits all their criteria (leftist, yells, hates Bush, hates Iraq) and she's still "leaving the party." I'm sure Ralph Nader will be happy to have her vote; that should give him something like a 200% increase in his voter base.

Let me get back to Sheehan, though, before I get too far off base; correct me if I'm wrong, but when has Sheehan ever been the "face" of anything? The last I checked, she was a shrill leftist dishonoring the memory of her son while attacking the Bush administration and consorting with tyrannical leaders such as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. This whole "quitting" thing is, as most of the thing she does are, just another publicity stunt. I think that we can just let her fade into obscurity and be remembered as that one angry woman who yelled about a lot of stuff (well, make that the second angry woman, after Eve Ensler, of course).

Good riddance. This is not racial profiling! This is not targeting "brown faces!" Do you know what this is? This is targeting CRIMINALS! Illegals are criminals! Criminals. Criminals.

How hard is this? How difficult is it to understand that these actions are necessary?

Some Democrat was saying that "first they're coming for the Latinos, who are they going to come next?" Implying that death squads are going to come after other sects of society is such a simpleton response; after all, this is America, not a Saddam-era Iraq. The issue that people are not getting is that the INS is not going after Hispanics; they are going after criminals. I don't care what race someone is, if they are an illegal alien, they don't belong here and should be arrested and deported.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://conservativerumblings.blogspot.com/2006/12/racial-profiling-give-me-break.html' title='"Racial profiling?"
